Triathlon - Team Hagkull

Team Hagkull

Brad and Benjamin are a father/son triathlon team, where Ben is pulled and pushed through the various stages by his father Brad. Ben was born with Spina Bifida, a condition that involves the incomplete development of the spinal cord, and gets around in a wheelchair.

After watching an inspirational story where Dick Hoyt and his handicapped son Rick participated in IRONMAN Hawaii together, Ben announced, “Daddy, I want to do that”. After several months of training, the team competed in their first event - the Chill Out Duathlon in May, 2004. Later that summer they competed in their first triathlon, and since then have completed 12 of these multisport races together. They have even found a way for Ben to do a kids triathlon on his own.

The pair competes with three simple goals: 1. To raise awareness of Spina Bifida. 2. To send the message that “disability” is only a word and that lofty goals can be achieved by the physically disabled. 3. To model their motto – where Finishing is Winning – in triathlons they compete in.

The Hagkulls have even founded an annual event called the Hope River Classic, Where participants run, walk or wheel a 5km or 8km course to raise awareness and funds for the Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association of BC.
